Seth Hopkins (Executive Director, Booth Western Art Museum, Cartersville, Georgia): In the tradition of great American historical artists, Brad Schmehl can bring a historical moment to life and make us feel as if we are witnessing it in person. Whether it is an action scene full of whizzing bullets, canon blasts and Rebel yells; or a quiet time of reflection and reverence, he is equally adept at evoking the appropriate emotion. His works are full of accurate details based on laborious research, however he does not allow the specifics to overshadow the artistic quality of the composition or paint handling, and the human experiences that are really his subjects.
Stuart Johnson (Owner, Settlers West Gallery, Tucson, Arizona): I first saw Bradley Schmehl’s art at the Booth Museum of Western Art in Georgia. I was there with Howard Terpning. Howard made a point of complementing Bradley’s work (“Jackson And His Disciples” and “Tigers To The Rescue”), stating “Now this fellow can really paint!” This of course inspired me, as an art dealer, to immediately contact Bradley and invite him to show his work at Settlers West. Bradley's twist on subject matter is his alone. It is a pleasure to feature his art in our gallery.
Howie & Frankie Alper (Trustees of Western Spirit - Scottsdale Museum of the West, Scottsdale, Arizona): Brad Schmehl is a wonderful artist. His composition is articulate, with fine originality. The various elements are well organized; scenes are exciting, yet delicate and life-like. His compositions are high quality, fascinating, and distinctive. It’s a pleasure to include his work in our collection.
Dean & Betty Jane Miller (Private Collectors): My wife and I wanted a certain kind of scene, so we sent Brad a number of photos depicting the kind of thing we liked. I learned that commissioning a painting is not simply picking out a scene and saying, "Here, paint this!" The artist has to "feel" the scene... so we worked together, sharing photos back and forth until Brad developed a vision for the art that we all loved.. we hung Brad’s painting in our living room where we could gaze at it every day, and we love it! We got a beautiful painting and learned a lot about art—and appreciation for the artist—in the bargain.
